The typical price ranges in California

As of 2026, most private CDL schools in Southern California charge between $2,500 and $8,000 for a complete Class A program. Community college programs often run $1,500–$3,000 but can have semester-long waitlists. Company-sponsored training looks free up front, but usually locks you into a 6–12 month contract at below-market pay — leave early and you owe the training cost back.

Right Lane confirms current tuition by phone for Class A automatic, Class A manual, and Class B programs. Call for pricing, payment options, and exactly what's included — the consultation is free, and there's no obligation.

Costs your tuition doesn't cover

Whatever school you choose, budget for the state and medical fees that are paid directly to the provider or the DMV — no school collects these for you:

  • Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) application fee to the CA DMV: $89, non-refundable
  • DOT physical exam: typically $80–$150 depending on the clinic
  • 5-panel drug test (enrollment requirement)
  • Endorsement test fees if you add hazmat, tanker, or doubles/triples later

Why the cheapest option isn't always cheapest

Two things decide what your training is really worth: how much actual seat time you get, and whether you pass the DMV skills test the first time. A bargain program with three students sharing one truck means you pay again — in retest fees and lost weeks of driver income. When you compare schools, ask how many behind-the-wheel hours are included (Right Lane's Class A plans include 140 hours of practical training under the FMCSA ELDT curriculum) and what the school's first-time pass record looks like.

Every week you're not licensed is a week of driver pay you're not earning — finishing faster is itself a financial decision.

Payment options
